Salary Levels Aren’t the Only Ones Moving Up: More Minimum Wage Changes Coming in 2017
Wednesday, August 3, 2016

As previously reported on this blog, many states and cities have continued to raise minimum wage rates well above the federal minimum. We’ve included a summary of the more notable 2017 minimum wage increases across the United States for multi-state employers, below:

California: Effective July 1, 2017, the minimum wage will increase to $14.00/hour. On July 1, 2018, the minimum wage will increase to $15.00/hour.

On April 4, California Governor Brown signed Senate Bill 3 into law. The new law increases the minimum wage to $15 per hour by Jan. 1, 2022 for employers with 26 or more employees. For employers with 25 or fewer employees the minimum wage will reach $15 per hour by Jan. 1, 2023. The law allows the governor to pause the minimum wage increases for economic or budgetary reasons. Numerous cities in California have also passed minimum wage reforms, including Oakland, Palo Alto, Richmond, Santa Clara and Sunnyvale. San Francisco, California made headlines as the first city to push a $15/hour minimum wage by 2018.

Connecticut: On January 1, 2017 minimum the minimum wage will increase to $10.10/hour.

Hawaii: On January 1, 2017 minimum wage will increase to $9.25/hour and increase again on January 1, 2018 to $10.10/hour.

Illinois: Employees working in the city of Chicago will see a gradual increase in the minimum wage over the next several years. On July 1, 2017, the minimum wage will increase to $11.00/hour. It will continue to rise, next to $12.00/hour in 2018, and then to $13.00/hour in 2019.

Maryland: Effective July 1, 2017, the minimum wage will increase to $9.25/hour. In 2018, the minimum wage will increase to $10.10/hour.

Massachusetts: On January 1, 2017 minimum wage will increase to $11.00/hour.

Michigan: Effective January 1, 2017 the minimum wage will increase to $8.90/hour.

New York: Effective December 31, 2015, the minimum wage increased to $9.00/hour. New York City passed legislation in 2016 to increase the minimum wage for employees working in the city to $15.00/hour by the end of 2018.

Vermont: Effective January 1, 2017, the minimum wage will increase to $10.00/hour. On January 1, 2018, the minimum wage will increase to $10.50/ hour.

Notably, Wisconsin has not increased its minimum wage since 2009. Efforts to increase Wisconsin’s minimum wage rates have not gained sufficient traction in the state legislature over the last several years.
