Employment Law This Week Episode 341 - Union Reps at OSHA Inspections, New COVID-19 Guidance, and Minimum Wage Updates [Video, Podcast]
Wednesday, April 10, 2024

This week, we’re learning more about the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA’s) final rule on safety inspections, new COVID-19 guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and minimum wage updates from California (CA), New York City (NYC), and Virginia (VA).

Union Reps Gain Access to OSHA Safety Inspections

On March 29, 2024, OSHA published its final rule defining which individuals can represent employees during safety inspections. The rule allows outside representatives—including those from labor unions—to accompany employees on “walkarounds” during OSHA inspections.

CDC Issues New COVID-19 Guidance

Following a decrease in COVID-19-related deaths and hospitalizations, the CDC has relaxed its recommendations for COVID-19 quarantine procedures. The new guidance shortens the quarantine period for those infected by the virus or other respiratory illnesses.

Minimum Wage Hikes Take Effect in CA and NYC but Stall in VA

Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin recently vetoed a bill to increase the state minimum wage to $15, citing the burden on small businesses. This move runs counter to the most recent wave of minimum wage hikes, including two that went into effect on April 1—one in CA and the other in NYC—for specific industries.
