Is This Another Mayweather v. Pacquiao?
Monday, September 14, 2015

At least you did not shell out $100 to watch these negotiations. Back in the middle of July, contract negotiations began between the UAW and the Big 3 with several ceremonial handshakes. Ending the two-tier wage structure and decreasing the use of temporary workers were two hot topics to address. Potential revisions to the healthcare packages have also grabbed headlines.

With the contracts expiring at midnight tonight, contract negotiations between the UAW and each of the Big 3 continue. Thus far, despite overwhelming strike votes at Ford, Fiat Chrysler and GM, it does not appear that a strike is imminent. While the UAW had previously set a tentative date of Labor Day to pick a strike target, that date has come and gone without a selection by the UAW. UAW President Dennis Williams recently indicated that a strike target will now be announced by today.

If the UAW does decide to strike, International Brotherhood of Teamsters General President Jim Hoffa has pledged the support of the Teamsters. In his remarks on Labor Day, Hoffa said, “If the UAW goes on strike, I make a pledge on behalf of the 1.4 million Teamster members – we will honor your picket lines.”
