Keith Covington practices immigration, labor and employment, and construction law in the firm's Birmingham office. His immigration work includes assisting employers with obtaining employment-based non-immigrant and immigrant visas for foreign national workers and advising clients on worksite compliance. He regularly helps businesses in a wide variety of industries file non-immigrant petitions, including petitions for H-1B, L-1, TN, J-1, and R visas, as well as labor certifications (PERM) and employment-based immigrant petitions. Keith also helps employers, employees, and other individual clients with adjustment of status applications, consular processing, green card matters, and citizenship naturalization petitions. In addition, he regularly advises companies on Form I-9 and E-Verify issues and assists with immigration compliance audits and investigations.
Keith’s labor and employment practice includes counseling employers on a wide variety of topics, including labor relations, wage and hour compliance, union avoidance, equal employment opportunity, OSHA compliance, disability accommodation, FMLA compliance, non-compete agreements, and issues relating to employee discipline and termination. His construction work includes advising contractors and others in the construction industry on contracts, contract administration, and claims. Throughout his career with the firm, Keith has litigated employment, construction, and various other types of claims in both state and federal courts. He also has provided assistance with union representation elections and handled matters before the National Labor Relations Board.
Keith regularly speaks and writes on topics relating to his practice. He is a regular contributor to Labor & Employment Insights, the blog published by the firm’s Labor and Employment Group, writing principally on immigration law developments and matters relating to the National Labor Relations Act. Keith is a member of the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) and regularly attends that organization’s annual national conference. He has been listed in Birmingham Magazine as a "Top Attorney" in Immigration.
Keith also speaks at events sponsored by the Alabama Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), the trade association for merit shop construction contractors, and has had several articles published in the Alabama Construction News, ABC’s industry magazine. Keith co-authored the Alabama Construction Law Manual published by Thomson West, writing the “Labor and Employment” and “Health and Safety” chapters.
