Jose Basabe is an Associate at Katten's New York City office. He advises clients across all industries, including financial services, retail, manufacturing, new and emerging technology and cryptocurrencies. Jose counsels clients on the intersectionality of the law with privacy and cybersecurity practices. Jose also advises clients on operating in accordance with current and anticipated privacy and data security laws, including but not limited to, the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), the New York Stop Hacks and Improve Electronic Data Security (SHIELD) Act, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and state safeguard and data breach notification laws. He assists clients with drafting privacy, data and information security notices, policies and procedures.
Having previously worked to protect key national infrastructure assets as deputy director of the National Security Agency Threat Operations Center at Fort Gordon, Georgia, Jose brings an informed perspective to his matters. Jose uses his nearly two decades of experience in the US Intelligence Community and background as a crew commander for the Air Force Computer Emergency Response Team to be responsive to clients and help bring order to the uncertainty often present in the aftermath of a data breach.
Jose is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) and a Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM).
Jose spent a large part of his distinguished military service in intelligence, starting his career in the US Air Force as a flight commander conducting highly classified Special Technical Operations. He served in various intelligence operations roles at duty stations in Texas, Georgia, and Washington, DC, with combat deployments to Iraq and Qatar. During his military career, he received the Defense Meritorious Service Medal (twice), USAF Meritorious Service Medal, USAF Commendation Medal (twice), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal (with one bronze star), National Defense Service Medal and Global War on Terrorism Medal.
