Confirmation Hearing for OMB Director Nominee
On Tuesday, January 24, the Senate Committee on the Budget and the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs will hold confirmation hearings for President Donald Trump’s nominee for Director of the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Rep. Mick Mulvaney (R-SC).
It is anticipated that Rep. Mulvaney, a founder of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, will face opposition from Democratic committee members; however, he has received strong support from fellow Republicans and is expected to be confirmed.
While in Congress, Rep. Mulvaney co-authored the Cut, Cap, and Balance Act, which would curb and cap federal spending, and provide for a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution. As a self-proclaimed fiscal conservative, Rep. Mulvaney supported sequestration-level discretionary spending caps on both defense and non-defense spending. In addition, Rep. Mulvaney voted against increasing the debt ceiling every time it was brought up for debate during his tenure in the House and instead actively championed legislation requiring offsets for new spending measures.
Rep. Mulvaney currently serves on the House Committee on Financial Services and the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. He previously served on the House Committee on Small Business and the House Committee on the Budget.
