News & Notes – Republican Convention (Day 2)
Thursday, August 30, 2012

– Rep. Paul Ryan formally accepted his party’s nomination for Vice President in a speech before the convention last night.  In it, he declared that “Obamacare comes to more than two thousand pages of rules, mandates, taxes, fees, and fines that have no place in a free country.”  He also called the Affordable Care Act the “greatest threat to Medicare,” and promised that “a Romney-Ryan administration will protect and strengthen Medicare, for my Mom’s generation, for my generation, and for my kids and yours.”  He did not, however, delve into the specific Medicare changes expressed in the party platform.

– Politico’s David Nather breaks down what Ryan had to say about health care… and what he didn’t.

– The Associated Press fact checking crew declares that Ryan “took some factual shortcuts” in his explanations of the ACA and Medicare.

– Kaiser Health News offers a helpful FAQ on Obama vs. Ryan and Medicare spending.

– National Journal took a poll of Democratic and Republican insiders and “found that majority of both GOP and Democratic operatives sense their respective standard-bearers can win on the Medicare issue,” which makes a continued fight through the election all but certain.  NJ’s Meghan McCarthy also takes a look at the advisors who are shaping Mitt Romney’s health policy.
