More Details Added to CA Bill Prohibiting Fluorinated Chemicals in Food Packaging
Thursday, July 20, 2017

The California Senate has amended further AB 958 on fluorinated chemicals in food packaging to specify specific actions that would be required under the Green Chemistry program. (For background information on the bill, see our previous article, California Bill Prohibiting Fluorinated Chemicals Moves Forward With Modifications.)

The amended bill requires the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to include food packaging containing perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances in the 2018-20 Priority Product Work Plan. If DTSC does not identify food packaging containing this substances as draft priority products due to a finding of insufficient data, further action is required under the legislation. This includes posting the findings on the DTSC website and pursuing the necessary data to conduct and complete the priority product evaluation and regulatory process for food packaging containing perfluoroalkyl or polyfluoroalkyl substances.

The bill was amended on July 17, 2017 and then re-referred to the Senate Committee on Appropriations. A copy of the bill showing the changes made on July 17, can be found on here.
