In a study released by IPR Daily and incoPat Innovation Index Research Center, Huawei remains the top Chinese corporate patentee in China for the first half of 2020. The number of Chinese patent grants (excluding Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan) in the first half of 2020 at the China National Intellectual Property Administration totaled 217,222, and Chinese applicants accounted for 81% of these patents. In the first half of 2020, there were 11 Chinese companies with more than 1,000 patents. Among them, Huawei ranked first with 3,005 patents, State Grid ranked second with 2,510 patents, and OPPO ranked third with 2004.

Mobile phone technologies remained popular with at least five of the top twenty patentees in that space including Huawei, ZTE, VIVO, Xiaomi, and China Mobile.
In terms of geographic distribution of patentees, Guangdong Province ranked first (29,620), Beijing ranked second (25,848) and Jiangsu Province ranked third (17,667).
