Quebec
Quebec is Canada’s largest province by land area, and it is also the second most populous province after Ontario. It is the only province to have French as the primary-speaking language, and as the official language of the province. A majority of residents live on or near Greater Montreal.
The province’s economy has historically been driven by natural resources; however, in recent years, development in biofuel, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, aerospace, and information technology, have also greatly contributed to the growing economy. This alongside the tourism-industry are the leading drivers of Quebec’s economy. Natural resources, well-developed infrastructure, IT, multimedia, and software industries, are a major driving factor of the province’s economic prowess. There are approximately 115 telecommunications companies established in the province, including Motorola, IBM, and CMC, among others.
Major attractions in the area include local cuisine, and the province has a professional NHL team (Montreal Canadiens). The Grand Prix du Canada Formula 1 race also takes place in the province annually. The Historic District of Old Quebec is an UNESCO world heritage site, and one of the protected areas in the province. La Mauricie National Park, Saguenay Fjord National Park, Forillon National Park, are among the 24 national parks which are visited by tourists, and protected by the federal government, in the province.
In terms of government, the Quebec government refers to the National Assembly of Quebec, the non-political staff that ensures service delivery and the cabinet drawn from the legislative assembly. The lieutenant governor represents Queen Elizabeth II and acts as the head of the state in the province, while the Premier serves as head of government. The province has a total of 17 administrative regions at the regional level, and 86 regional county municipalities, 2 metropolitan communities at the local level.
