Sophia is an intellectual property attorney and registered patent agent with a background in biomedical engineering. She focuses her practice on US and international patent prosecution and strategic IP counseling, including patentability and competitive landscape investigations and analyses. Sophia represents clients in a variety of technical fields with a particular emphasis on the medical device and biotechnology industries.
Prior to joining Mintz, Sophia was an associate at an IP-focused law firm, where she drafted and filed patent applications for the biomedical, mechanical, and instrumentation markets. She also worked on trademark applications and clearance searches and assisted with litigation.
While earning her JD, Sophia worked as a next-generation sequencing (NGS) program manager and IP coordinator for a global lab instrumentation company, assisting with USPTO filings and negotiating contract terms. In addition, while working as a law clerk and in an internship, she performed competitive intelligence analysis, drafted contracts and licensing agreements, and prepared responses to patent office actions.
Before law school, Sophia worked as a systems integration engineer at a Houston-based biotechnology company, gaining experience in DNA sequencing, cancer diagnostics, antibody and antigen manufacturing, biodegradable implants, and instrument development. In that role, she investigated prior art to assist with expanding the company’s patent portfolio and performed IP due diligence related to the company’s $200 million acquisition.
