Nicola Coleman focuses her practice on government law and policy issues. She assists clients on a variety of New York State regulatory matters related to insurance, health, housing, and administrative law.
Immediately prior to joining the firm, Nicola served as Deputy Counsel for the New York State Senate Majority, advising the Majority Leader and Chairs of the Health, Insurance and Housing Committees on budgetary and policy priorities regarding health insurance and housing issues. She also assisted in managing staff and coordinating administrative and policy protocols.
Nicola served for twelve years as counsel to several New York State government entities, including both houses of the legislature. She was an Associate Counsel for the Assembly Majority whereby she had experience in drafting and negotiating legislation on policy initiatives in the areas of Housing, Consumer Protection, and Veterans’ Affairs. Nicola also worked for the New York State Department of Health, where she served as counsel and played a key role in establishing the state-based health insurance Marketplace. There through its second year of open enrollment, she ensured state-based initiatives were compliant with state and federal statutes and regulations, such as the Affordable Care Act. She also helped develop internal privacy and security procedures in addition to quality assurance guidelines.
Prior to attending law school, Nicola worked in New Jersey at MD-X Solutions, Inc., beginning as a Medical Claims Analyst, negotiating with health plan administrators in resolving outstanding hospital balances. Within her first year there, she was promoted to a Team Leader, overseeing a team of managed care auditors.
