Mario Arango is passionate about helping clients understand the law and how to best protect their intellectual property endeavors – whatever they may be. To that end, he represents and advises clients in the entertainment and technology industries on issues including, but not limited to, IP, cybersecurity, privacy, and right of publicity.
Taking a client-centric approach, Mario has experience helping a variety of clients, including world-class musicians, composers, authors, directors, and documentarians, as well as large public entities, in securing and protecting trademarks, acquiring, registering and enforcing necessary copyrights, as well as structuring, negotiating, reviewing, and drafting licenses and agreements.
He also helps ensure that cybersecurity responses are provided in the right timeframes and that the right systems are in place to ensure compliance.
Having worked professionally as a classically trained violinist, Mario was inspired to help creators and artists, after learning how the law impacts artisans in general. He was intent on becoming an attorney – and helping other creative individuals to navigate the oftentimes challenging web of intellectual property laws.
Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg, Mario practiced with an Indiana entertainment law firm and was an attorney fellow with the Indiana University Office of the Vice President and General Counsel. In those roles, he advised large institutions, including a public television station, on their intellectual property matters and best practices for how to handle their general legal affairs. He also represented libraries, music school, and art schools in copyright litigation, trademark enforcement and privacy compliance matters, including a case of first impression case regarding state sovereign immunity in connection to copyright law. In addition, Mario led and advised on the university’s implementation of the Media Digitization and Preservation Initiative and supported its Global Research Network Operations Center (GlobalNOC), its high-speed fiber option networks, along with other IT services.
During law school, Mario was a mediator and mentor with the IU Family and Children Mediation Clinic and a law fellow with Votorantim/Demarest & Almeida in São Paulo, Brazil.
