Jim Donelon held the role of Commissioner of Insurance for the state of Louisiana from 2006-2024, making him the longest-serving Commissioner of Insurance in the state’s history. On a national basis, Jim advises insurance companies, agencies, producers, InsurTechs, and other industry participants on a wide range of corporate, operational, and regulatory concerns. From transactions to licensing to enforcement matters and everything in between, Jim brings his considerable knowledge to bear in counseling clients in matters of state and federal law.
As Commissioner of a state at the forefront of many hot topics for the industry – ranging from the impacts of climate and weather events to high poverty rates to energy and transportation concerns – Jim advocated on behalf of the country’s Southeast region on national and international stages.
Jim held the position of President of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) in 2013, which he leveraged to become a respected and valued voice in insurance discussions worldwide for many years. He guided Louisiana through a number of deadly disasters, ranging from Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike, Isaac, Laura, Delta, and Ida to the COVID-19 pandemic.
