The Week Ahead in the European Parliament – September 29, 2017
Friday, September 29, 2017

Summary

Next week, there will be a plenary sitting of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France. Several significant debates, votes and committee meetings will take place.

On Monday, the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (“ITRE”) will vote on a report on the European Electronic Communications Code (the telecoms reform). The reform package aims to enhance connectivity across the EU and pave the way for 5G. The proposal could still be amended to remove fees for intra-EU phone calls or to set up an emergency alerts system.

On the same day, the European Parliament will discuss an own initiative report on the fight against cybercrime. The resolution calls for both public and private investment in cybersecurity and education, coupled with greater cross-border police cooperation as well as  information exchange. The motion for a  resolution included in the report will be put to a vote on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, MEPs will discuss the progress of the Brexit negotiation talks with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier. MEPs will then vote on a resolution  with the European Parliament’s recommendations regarding the forthcoming EU27 summit, scheduled to take place in October in Brussels.

On Wednesday, MEPs will discuss their expectations for the forthcoming EU Summit with European Commission First Vice-President Frans Timmermans and the European Council’s Estonian Presidency. Among other topics, MEPs will discuss Brexit, migration and a common EU asylum policy, as well as defence and EU-Turkey relations.
