NASEM Will Hold Virtual Town Hall on September 5 as Part of Its Quadrennial Review of the NNI
Thursday, August 22, 2024

As part of its quadrennial review of the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) will hold a virtual town hall on September 5, 2024, for stakeholders to share their thoughts on the future of nanotechnology in the United States. The overall objective of NASEM’s review is to identify opportunities and barriers to broadening access to nanotechnology research and development (R&D) infrastructure in the United States. As part of its review, NASEM will:

  • Explore trends, opportunities, and emerging use cases for nanoscale R&D and examine how well positioned the nation’s nanotechnology-relevant infrastructure — including people, instruments, and facilities — is to be impactful in current and emerging use cases;
  • Analyze the composition of the science and engineering community currently being served by the nation’s nanotechnology R&D infrastructure; and
  • Identify barriers to use for communities that are not fully engaging with nanotechnology R&D infrastructure, including, but not limited to, examining the awareness, interaction models, peer review models, financial and travel logistics, remote access resources, intellectual property (IP) and contractual agreements, opportunities to enhance data and resource sharing, and approaches to incentivizing use.

NASEM may make recommendations on the topics listed above.
