A settlement was reached between a Kansas-based bus manufacturer (ElDorado National Inc.) and the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. The issue at hand was the potential hazard of fires and/or explosions after wheelchair modifications were made on 82 Toyota Sienna minivans.
After an investigation was conducted as a result of a check engine light coming on, it was found that the fuel filler neck was making contact with the left rear shock absorber. When a fuel filler neck is worn down, it creates the opportunity for potentially leaking gasoline and gasoline vapors to escape (a possible fire and explosion hazard).
ElDorado posted a national recall of all Toyota Sienna minivans with modifications. From the investigation, five out of the 82 minivans modified by ElDorado were found to have faulty modifications. No injuries were reported.
ElDorado is developing reporting requirements for dealerships receiving consumer complaints.
