Hi TCPAWorld!!! So, I’ve been noticing a lot of confusing headlines out there implying more or less that calls using AI voice technology are going to become completely illegal.
I mean, the title of the press release from the FCC is “FCC CHAIRWOMAN: MAKE AI VOICE-GENERATED ROBOCALLS ILLEGAL.”
Well, I’m here to clear this up for you.
The FCC’s proposal, initiated by Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, focuses on regulating unsolicited calls made using AI-generated voices, emphasizing the need for consent under the TCPA. This measure is particularly aimed at curtailing the use of AI technology to create voice calls that mimic real people, a practice increasingly employed in deceptive and fraudulent activities.
By bringing these AI-generated calls without prior consent under the scope of the TCPA by considering them “artificial voices,” the FCC intends to safeguard consumers from the potential misuse of voice cloning technology.
In short, callers using AI to generate voice communications will need to adhere to the same consent requirements as other forms of prerecorded/artificial voice calls.
There you go!
