Drone Stakeholders Discuss UAS Integration
Thursday, February 28, 2019

More than 40 unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) stakeholders from 20 global companies met with the Northeast UAS Airspace Integration Research Alliance to discuss goals and objectives of the UAS industry. During a two-day conference in Syracuse, New York, the group discussed which tests will help to advance the integration of UAS into the national airspace as well as what use-case scenarios are necessary to develop safety protocols for flights beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS). Specifically, the group discussed how the federal UAS test site at the Griffiss International Airport in Rome, New York can be used to advance these goals.

As a result of these discussions, the following use-case scenario tests will be conducted at the airport over the next few months:

  • Simulation of a BVLOS operation to a mock accident scene. This will demonstrate how UAS technology communicates to one universal system to improve safety and efficiency.

  • Live flights between Griffiss International Airport and Oriskany, New York. During these flights the UAS will communicate with weather service providers to understand flight conditions.

  • Testing of detect-and-avoid technology. These tests will include non-participating drones as well. These flights will help to ensure the safety of the UAS.

Each scenario will be broken into multiple phases and tested over a period of time.
