10 Places to Find Reliable Law Firm Blog Writers
Monday, October 7, 2024

As a law firm business owner, writing blog posts may not be high on your list of priorities. Between attending to clients, managing finances, and running a team, you’re likely to have your hands full with other responsibilities.

But posting to your law firm blog can yield amazing results in terms of traffic and leads for your firm. In fact, one study found that businesses that have blogs generate 67% more leads than companies that don’t blog!

To take advantage of these benefits—without burdening yourself with writing content—it can be helpful to hire a freelance blog writer. This is someone who is experienced in legal writing but often comes at less of a cost than to create the content yourself.

Check out these reliable methods for hiring professional, high-quality blog writers for your law firm website.

1. LinkedIn

LinkedIn is the leading online networking site for professionals, boasting over 1 billion users worldwide. And while many lawyers may see LinkedIn as the place for referrals, it’s also an amazing platform for hiring freelance writers.

Simply search for “freelance writer”, “blog writer”, or “legal writer” on LinkedIn and you’ll be directed to individuals who’ve listed these services in their profiles. LinkedIn is a reputable platform for finding skilled writers because the writers who have taken the time to optimize their profiles and showcase their services are clearly attentive to their online presence. Look for writers who link out to work examples, a portfolio, and/or client testimonials.

Once you’ve found a writer (or a few) who sparks your interest, send them a message to inquire about their services. We recommend asking for portfolio examples, whether they have experience with legal industry writing, and rates. Consider starting with a paid test article before committing to a contract.

2. Facebook Groups

Like LinkedIn, Facebook is a widely used online platform for individuals, contractors, and businesses. While it can be difficult to find writers by using the typical Facebook search, Facebook Groups in particular can be a great way to find freelance writers.

Log into your Facebook profile and venture to the Groups tab. Search for Groups related to “writers for hire”, “freelance writers”, or “hire content writers”. Try to avoid Groups that are focused on training or marketing for writers, as these tend to be support groups rather than hiring groups.

You’ll need to “join” the Group before you can post in the Group. Be sure to read through the rules and requirements of the group, as there may be certain things you can/cannot post (like job postings). When you make your post, be sure to outline your requirements, what experience you’re looking for, and next steps for applying for the position.

3. Referrals

One of the best ways to find a reliable blog writer is to ask your network for referrals. That way, you’ll receive a recommendation from someone who has already worked with the writer and can voice for your services.

Some sources for writer referrals include other lawyers/law firms, business owners, or digital marketers. Reach out to these people in your network (via email, LinkedIn, etc.) and ask whether they know of any blog writers they would recommend. If possible, ask if they can make an email introduction so you can inquire about the writer’s services.

4. Industry Publications

Legal industry publications like National Law Review are a great source for legal-related articles, but they can also be an uncommon place to find great writers. Many of the articles on legal publications are written by independent contributors, which means they might be available to write content for other blogs/publications as well.

Now, much of the content on these sites may be written by other lawyers, who are less likely to take you up on a writer-for-hire gig. Look for contributors who have “professional writer”, “freelancer”, or “digital marketer” in the title. Even digital marketing agency owners may be available for blogging content, whether as contractors or through their agency.

5. Google

Google is often the obvious place for finding businesses, but many forget Google can be used to find independent contractors as well. The key here is not to look for writing agency sites but for independent writers’ websites and portfolios.

For example, if you search for “freelance writer for hire” and scroll past the agency results, you’ll find individual blogs. Any writer who is ranking well in Google has proven themselves to be well-versed in writing and Search Engine Optimization (SEO). They’re likely available for hire and can help your law firm get more organic visibility and traffic

6. Medium.com

Medium.com is a writing platform where anyone can share stories, ideas, and knowledge. You can find content related to a wide range of topics, from philosophy and entrepreneurship to gardening and politics.

Though Medium is open to all (and is a common place for business owners to publish content), it’s a great place to find independent writers. Simply go to the search box and look for “legal writer”, “freelance writer”, and the like, and then click the People tab. This will direct you to users who have these titles in their bios.

Alternatively, you can search for law-related topics and read individual articles, and then if you find an article you like, check out who wrote it. Venture to their bio and see whether they’ve included a website link or email address to learn more about their services.

7. Indeed

A more traditional route to finding a blog writer is to use a job posting site like Indeed. Indeed allows you to publish an open job, include a job description, and attract applicants.

Here are a few key requirements to ensure your job listing meets Indeed’s guidelines and reaches the best candidates:

  • Sign up for an Indeed employer account using your business email or link it to your Google or Apple account. Fill out the required details, such as your company name, industry, and location.
  • Include a job title that’s clear, concise, and descriptive of the role (e.g., "Legal Blog Writer" instead of just "Writer").
  • Provide detailed information about the position, responsibilities, and any specific requirements (such as SEO experience, legal industry experience, etc.).
  • In terms of Salary, this field can be listed as a range or left blank. That said, including salary details often increases candidate interest.
  • Provide clear instructions on how candidates should apply. You can either allow candidates to apply directly through Indeed, or redirect them to your website, an external link, or your email address.
  • If you choose to sponsor your job post (i.e., promote it for increased visibility), you'll need to set a budget and payment method. Free job postings are also available but may have limited visibility.

8. Instagram

In today’s world of personal branding and entrepreneurship, social media platforms like Instagram have become increasingly popular for networking and online marketing. Many freelancers now use Instagram to build their brands and market their services, making this platform a great place for business owners to find freelance writers.

Log into Instagram and search for “legal writer”, “content writer”, “freelance writer”, and/or “legal writer”. You’ll likely see some of these terms appear in peoples’ bios. These are individuals who are using Instagram to showcase their services.

Look for a website link directing you to the writer’s online portfolio, or simply inquire by sending them a Direct Message (DM). As with LinkedIn, you can inquire about rates, work examples, legal industry experience, etc.

9. Fiverr

Fiverr is one of several popular freelancer directories that business owners can use to find contractors, from writers to graphic designers to video editors. You’ll need to create an account to post a job to the platform, though you can also request work directly from individuals’ profiles.

Fiverr is lower on our list because, while you’re spoiled for quantity, it can be difficult to find the quality writers in the bunch. You will need to take some time to interview writers, review their work examples, request paid test articles, and discuss rates. That said, Fiverr is often the preferred platform for brands that a writer in a pinch.

10. Upwork

Upwork is another freelancer marketplace that advertises services from blog writing to website design to SEO. It is very similar to Fiverr in that you can create a job posting or reach out to writers directly.

Again, it may take more time to interview writers and find the right fit for your law firm. Be sure to discuss the subject matter of your blog, your specific requirements (e.g. whether SEO marketing experience is needed), and rates. Ideally, look for a writer who has experience writing for the legal industry.

Build Up Your Blog, Attract More Clients

Keeping up with your law firm blog is a great way to generate more organic traffic, attract clients, and provide valuable information to existing clients. We recommend posting at least once per week to see these benefits, implementing SEO best practices throughout. Hiring an experienced blog writer is one of the best ways to keep up this volume and quality.

There are many platforms you can use to find reliable writers. Ultimately, you’ll want to find a writer who can capture your brand voice, accurately cover a range of legal topics, and meet your budget. A purposeful blog strategy is one of the best ways to get more clients and grow your business.
