Hungary

Located in Europe, Hungary is medium-sized member state of the European Union with about 10 million inhabitants living in the country. It’s largest and capital city is Budapest. The Hungarian state emerged from the conquest of the Carpathian Basin, in the late ninth century AD by the Hungarian grand prince Árpád.

Hungary is a major contributor in the industrial and tech sectors, as the 35th largest exporter and 34th largest importer of goods. The country also offers universal healthcare to citizens, tuition-free university, and social security benefits. It joined the EU in 2004 and has been part of the  Schengen Area since 2007. It’s also a member of the World Bank, NATO, WTO, and the United Nations, among other international foreign relations groups. Hungary is one of Europe’s leading tourist destinations, and is home to largest thermal water cave system and the second largest thermal lake in the world.

Hungary’s political framework was reworked in 2012, and today the country is a unitary, parliamentary, representative democratic republic. The  Fundamental Law of Hungary is the country’s constitution, with amendments requiring ⅔ vote by Parliament. The President serves as head of state of the country, and the Prime Minister is the second most politically influential person in politics, followed by the Speaker of the National Assembly who is voted in by the National Assembly. The Prime Minister is voted in by the National Assembly, and has executive power, as well as the power to assign and dismiss cabinet members.

The country’s judiciary follows a civil law system with divided courts. Courts are divided by criminal, civil, and and administrative courts with jurisdiction over litigation between individuals and the public administration. Hungarian law is codified to resemble German law, as well as Roman law. Criminal and civil court systems are comprised of local, regional appellate, and the Supreme Court. The highest court is in Budapest.
