Tara focuses her practice on privacy and data security issues across multiple industries such as technology, retail, e-commerce, and life sciences, with an emphasis on compliance risks and regulatory requirements affecting the healthcare sector. Tara became certified as a legal specialist in Privacy and Information Security Law by the North Carolina State Bar Board of Legal Specialization in 2018 as part of the inaugural class of specialists in this field – one of just 10 attorneys in the state to hold this certification.
She helps clients with all aspects of privacy and data security law, including establishing and assessing compliance programs, responding to data breaches and security incidents, conducting risk analyses, drafting privacy policies, negotiating contracts that govern data use and security, and responding to regulator requests and investigations. Tara also conducts diligence activities and drafts related terms for mergers, acquisitions, and other transactions involving data assets. Tara provides guidance on matters related to the CCPA, HIPAA, COPPA, CAN-SPAM, and other state and federal privacy, security and data breach laws in the U.S. She also advises clients on the GDPR, Privacy Shield, and related requirements of European data protection laws.
In addition, Tara has a broad range of experience counseling clients on issues related to the development of mobile and web-based applications, cloud computing, use of machine learning and AI tools, patient outreach programs, IoT devices, and other technology solutions that rely on personal information.
