Professional Biography

Patrick Compton is a trial attorney with a practice focused on complex banking, real estate, and environmental litigation matters.

He represents financial institutions, private lenders, mortgage originators, developers, architects, contractors, governmental entities, and quasi-governmental entities. He has tried numerous cases to verdict and has argued multiple cases on appeal. His combination of industry and trial experience gives Patrick a strong appreciation of the needs of his clients, as well as an understanding of how best to achieve their goals.

Patrick was also one of the first litigators in the nation to become a LEED® Accredited Professional.

Representative Experience

Financial Services

  • Prosecuted claims by a bank over its ownership interest in a $40 million New Markets Tax Credit portfolio, resulting in the transfer of all ownership interests to the bank.

  • Defended a bank through trial and appeal against a $7 million dollar lender liability claim. The trial resulted in dismissal of all claims against the bank and a verdict in the bank’s favor of over $9 million, with judgment upheld on appeal.

  • Defended a bank through pre-trial proceedings against a $10 million lender liability claim, with all claims resolving shortly before trial.

  • Obtained dismissal on motions practice of a $5 million dollar lender liability claim made by a guarantor involving a failed real estate development project.

  • Obtained judgment through trial, motions practice, and settlement of over $100 million on behalf of various lenders.

Real Estate, Oil & Gas, and Construction Litigation

  • Represented a steel fabricator and its president at trial in defense of a $7 million lost profit claim stemming from a ruptured oil field storage tank. The trial resulted in dismissal of all claims against the president on directed verdict, a full defense verdict in favor of the steel fabricator, and a counterclaim judgment for the steel fabricator.

  • Defended a real estate developer at trial in a partnership dispute alleging $3 million in damages. The trial resulted in dismissal of all claims against the developer, and a judgment in the developer’s favor of over half a million dollars.

  • Defended a real estate developer in a construction defect action alleging over $16 million in damages, resulting in a favorable settlement and dismissal of all claims against the developer shortly before trial.

Environmental Litigation

  • Prosecuted claims on behalf of a mutual ditch company against the federal government regarding the improper imposition of FLPMA terms and conditions on a high-altitude reservoir.

  • Defended a public highway authority in litigation involving NEPA and ESA claims challenging a federal land transfer to a consortium of local governments for completion of a transportation beltway around Metro Denver.

  • Defended multi-million dollar CERCLA claims brought against a mineral explorer, arising from an abandoned gold mine.
