Cynthia S. Butera has more than 25 years of experience representing and defending parties in complex commercial litigation, commercial contract drafting and negotiation, and corporate transactions and governance. She practiced as a New York Certified Public Accountant for five years before pursuing her legal career, which began as an associate at Wilson Elser in 1997 and included managing her own practice before re-joining the firm in 2017.
Cynthia defends complex class actions and multidistrict litigations and has successfully litigated claims presented under federal and state statues, including the federal securities laws and the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).
Highly experienced in representing accountants in the defense of professional malpractice claims, Cynthia aggressively defends against claims by the accountants’ clients or third-party users of accounting services involving claims such as audit failure, federal and state security law violations, failure to detect embezzlement or fraud, allegedly providing faulty tax or estate planning advice or services, and claims of improperly valuing businesses.
Cynthia provides consulting and advisory services to accountants and tax professionals in the areas of ethics, risk management and professional responsibility. Additionally, she represents accountants in professional disciplinary proceedings and peer review hearings.
