Several lawyers I know have discussed providing Election Day assistance, making sure that people are permitted to exercise their right to vote. Some have wondered, however, how they can provide such assistance without running a conflict check for each voter they want to help.

The answer is Missouri Rule 4-6.5, and corresponding Model Rule 6.5. This Rule permits a lawyer to provide "short-term limited legal services to a client" under the auspices of a nonprofit organization as long as the lawyer does not know of a conflict for the lawyer himself or herself, or a disqualifying conflict that the lawyer's firm has and that might impute to the lawyer.
