The Joint Commission Cuts 200+ Accreditation Standards
Thursday, August 3, 2023

In its second tranche of major standards reduction, The Joint Commission will eliminate or consolidate 210 accreditation standards across many of its programs. The modification to the affected standards will be effective August 27, 2023.

The reduction is part of a major review effort of Joint Commission requirements announced in September of 2022. The Joint Commission’s goal for the review effort is to streamline requirements and eliminate standards that do not add value to accreditation surveys.

The first tranche of standards reduction went into effect on January 1, 2023, and eliminated or consolidated 182 standards, including the elimination of 56 standards from the Hospital Accreditation Program.

This second tranche focuses largely on non-acute programs, such as ambulatory health care, office-based surgery, critical access hospital, behavioral health care, laboratory, nursing care center and home care. Additionally, the Joint Commission eliminated or consolidated 7 hospital standards and revised 4 hospital standards. The list of eliminated or consolidated standards in the second tranche is available here.
