The research buoy purchased by Grand Valley State University last year is now stationed 37 miles offshore in Lake Michigan. Anchored in 175 foot waters on May 7, the buoy will collect wind measurements at various heights up to 175 meters. Real time data is being transmitted to GVSU via satellite phone technology. GVSU intends on incorporating use of this unique scientific tool in developing a proposal to do an engineering feasibility study of floating platforms for wind turbines. Working with The Glosten Associates of Seattle and Michigan Technological University, the team is seeking federal funding for the engineering and design work. An initial letter of intent has been sent to the Department of Energy, and the final proposal is due May 31. Floating wind turbines can be placed in deeper waters and therefore can be positioned further from shore than wind turbines dependent on towers resting on the lake bottom.
