The European Union (EU) Observatory for Nanomaterials (EUON) announced on September 26, 2024, that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has published the following reports under its NAMs4NANO Project:
- “Review of New Approach Methodologies for Application in Risk Assessment of Nanoparticles in the Food and Feed Sector: Status and Challenges” is a review article on the currently available New Approach Methodologies (NAM) that are potentially useful for risk assessment of nanoparticles in the food and feed sector. It follows the structure of the EFSA Guidance on Nanomaterials Risk Assessment and expands it, where needed, to support decision‐making in selection of NAMs for nano-specific risk assessment.
- “Proposal for a qualification system for New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) in the food and feed sector: example of implementation for nanomaterial risk assessment” details a proposal for a generic framework to speed up the regulatory use of NAMs for chemical risk assessment in food and feed. The framework is initially proposed for risk assessment of nanoparticles, in line with the provisions of the EFSA Guidance on Nanomaterials Risk Assessment. EUON notes that this report “is published as [an] interim version with the intention to stimulate a broader discussion among experts and stakeholders involved in nanotechnology, food safety, and public health. Comments are welcome by the end of December 2024 via the following email MESE@efsa.europa.eu.”
