DHS Extends Temporary Protected Status for Syria
Wednesday, August 7, 2019

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently announced the decision to preserve and extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Syrian nationals for a period of 18 months. TPS designation for Syria was scheduled for termination on September 30, 2019. The DHS decision will extend it through March 31, 2021.

DHS will soon issue re-registration instructions for current beneficiaries of TPS from Syria. We anticipate that the re-registration instructions will include an automatic extension of TPS Employment Authorization Documents (EAD) for Syrians.

Temporary Protected Status is a designation given by DHS for a foreign country, due to conditions that would prevent nationals from that country from safely returning. DHS originally designated Syria for TPS on August 1, 2016.
