Kentucky workers may have heard of the proposed merger of cable companies Time-Warner and Comcast. That proposed merger would combine the largest cable company in the nation and the second largest media provider in the world, Comcast, with the second largest cable company in the nation, Time-Warner. Many have voiced concern over the lack of competition that could result from such a merger.
Interestingly a fresh franchise agreement between Danville and Time-Warner Cable could end up causing a delay on the merger. Typically, such agreements last 12 to 15 years, after which they can be renewed. Negotiations for a new franchise agreement are still underway, so it remains to be seen how things will end. As part of the new agreement, there would be a transfer to Comcast in line with the merger.
According to authorities on the issue, Danville is considering a transfer to another provider, which could impact the national merger deal. Details about the negotiations have not been publicly shared, but they reportedly have to do with noncompliance with respect to the old franchise agreement. The deadline for approving transfer of the agreement is August 7.
