Are There Regulations Concerning the Size of Food on a Label?
Sunday, May 21, 2017

Question

Are there any laws concerning the size of the picture on food packaging? More specifically, can the image be larger than the actual product, or are there any restrictions (i.e., maximum 150% of the actual product size)?

Answer

Under the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, a label cannot be false or misleading. An image larger than the actual product could be misleading and, therefore, could warrant the use of a statement on the label noting that the items in the image are larger than their actual size.
