On March 18, 2020, the Chamber of Deputies approved (with 275 votes in favor of) a Decree which adds paragraph f), section III of article 29 to the Energy Transition Law (Decree). The proposal was submitted by deputies Arturo Escobar y Vega and Nayeli Arlen Fernández Cruz of the Parliamentary Groups, members of the Partido Verde Ecologista de México and Morena parties.
Content of the Decree
The Decree provides that the Transition Strategy to Promote the Use of Cleaner Technologies and Fuels (Estrategia de Transición para Promover el Uso de Tecnologías y Combustibles más Limpios) issued by the Ministry of Energy, which contains policies and measures to promote the use of the country's renewable energy resources, shall promote programs for energy generation from renewable sources in medium-term proposals for federal agencies and other federal public administration entities including in its movable and immovable assets.
This reform seeks to reduce energy consumption in the governmental sector, reduce costs for the supply of traditional energy, and will also have direct environmental benefits.
