Ukraine

Ukraine is a sovereign state located in Eastern Europe, and is the 32nd most populous country in the world with nearly 43 million inhabitants. Kiev is the capital and largest city in the country.  Ukraine the largest country within Europe, and 46th largest in the world. Ukraine gained its independence from Russia in 1991 following the Soviet Union’s dissolution at the end of the Cold War. The Ukraine declared itself a neutral state after independence.

Ukraien partnered with NATO in 1994, and in 2013 the government suspended the Ukraine-European Union Association Agreement. Ukraine is considered a developing country, and has the lowest personal income in Europe. Corruption and high poverty rates are also a concern.

The Ukranian government is a semi-Presidential system with separate powers. It consists of the executive, legislative, and judiciary branches. The country is a member of the United Nations, OSCE, GUAM Organization, Council of Europe, and Commonwealth of Independent States.

The President is head of state and is elected every 5-years by popular vote. The Prime Minister oversees the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, which is the highest body of the Ukranian executive branch. 

The Ukrainian courts are guaranteed Constitutional freedom, and enjoy legal and financial freedom, guaranteed by Ukranian law since 2002. The President appoints court justices by decree every five years. There are three court levels with a broad range of jurisdictional powers in the country. There are 74 local courts in the country, courts of appeals (regional and city/Kiev and the Supreme Court. There is also a Constitutional court and High Anti-Corruption Court.
