Breaking Barriers Toward Inclusive Health Care: New ADA Title II Regulations Require Accessible Medical Diagnostic Equipment

Webinar, Hosted By Epstein Becker & Green, P.C.

Monday, September 30, 2024 - 1:00 PM - Monday, September 30, 2024 - 1:30 PM

To honor the 34th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), on July 26, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice signed a long-awaited final rule to improve access to medical diagnostic equipment (MDE) for people with disabilities (the “MDE Regulations”).

Stressing that accessible MDE is essential for people with disabilities to have equal access to medical care and avoid poor health outcomes, the MDE Regulations amend Title II of the ADA and directly apply to hospitals and health care clinics operated by state or local governments. The MDE Regulations create enforceable minimum standards for accessible design (as initially issued by the U.S. Access Board) covering MDE, including examination tables, weight scales, dental chairs, x-ray machines, mammography machines, and other radiological equipment commonly used for diagnostic purposes by health care professionals.

In this timely and informative webinar, Joshua Stein and Shira Blank, Members of the Firm, are joined by Stephen Strobach, Accessibility Specialist at Epstein Becker Green.

Topics

Attendees of this webinar will learn, among other things:

  • Who is covered by the MDE Regulations?
  • What constitutes MDE?
  • What are the technical accessibility standards adopted for MDE? How much MDE is required?
  • What are the deadlines for compliance with the MDE Regulations?
  • Are there limits to the need to provide MDE?
  • BONUS: What about Section 504?
