As a result of the November elections, there are fewer Republicans in the House (10) and more Democrats (3) in the Senate. Fewer Republicans in the House will decrease the cushion Republican leaders have for obtaining 218 votes on controversial legislation; the three additional Democrats in the Senate provide more cushion but still fall five votes short of the 60 votes needed to break any Republican-lead filibusters.
