Michigan Denies Driver’s Licenses to Beneficiaries of Deferred Action
Friday, October 12, 2012

The Michigan Secretary of State (SOS) announced on October 11, 2012 Michigan will not issue driver's licenses to beneficiaries of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy (DACA). While SOS previously indicated driver's licenses would be issued for four-year durations, SOS now states that DACA beneficiaries are not "legally present" in the United States for purposes of Michigan driver's license requirements because DACA does not grant lawful status.

Immigration attorneys and advocates are working to challenge the SOS decision, but at this time, successful DACA applicants will likely be unable to obtain a driver's license.
