S. Pierre Paret is Vice President for Government Relations at the American Arbitration Association. In this role, he is responsible for federal and state legislative, regulatory, and policy matters, as well as the development of government ADR programs. He has played a key role in developing ADR mechanisms in collaboration with Congress, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Federal Communications Commission, and other various state and federal agencies.
Mr. Paret joined the Association in 1989 after working in a private lobbying firm, a federal agency, and as a state-level political appointee. He has contributed to the drafting and passage of statutory language in several federal laws, including the Federal Arbitration Act, the Higher Education Act, and CLIA. He has also authored numerous articles on ADR legislation and co-authored reports and white papers on government relations issues.
Earlier in his career, he served as spokesperson and media coordinator for the Washington, D.C. office of a presidential campaign, and had significant media experience, with numerous appearances on television news and political programs -- both domestic and international -- as an expert on federal government and political issues.
Mr. Paret has also served on a variety of external committees and organizations, including the ABA Ad Hoc Committee on Federal ADR Confidentiality, the Alexandria Citizens Corps Council, and the Privacy Advisory Council of the Virginia legislature’s Joint Commission on Technology and Science.
