1. Indicator Explanation
Patent-intensive industries refer to a group of industries that meet the prescribed standards for the density and scale of invention patents, rely on intellectual property rights to participate in market competition, and conform to the orientation of innovation-driven development.
The added value of patent-intensive industries refers to the added value created by the production activities of all resident units in China’s patent-intensive industries within a certain period.
A resident unit refers to an economic unit that has a center of economic interest within the economic territory of China.
Production refers to the activities of creating new goods and services by utilizing factors such as labor and capital under the responsibility, control, and management of an institutional unit.
2. Accounting Classification
The classification of patent-intensive industries is based on the “Statistical Classification of Intellectual Property (Patent) Intensive Industries (2019)” and adopts a two-level classification. The first-level classification is divided into seven major categories according to the nature of economic activities: information and communication technology manufacturing, information and communication technology services, new equipment manufacturing, new materials manufacturing, pharmaceutical and medical industries, environmental protection industries, and R&D, design, and technical services. The second-level classification is further refined into 188 subcategories of national economic industries based on the first-level classification.
3. Accounting methods and data sources
The added value of patent-intensive industries is calculated using the income approach. The basic data required for this calculation mainly comes from national economic census data, relevant professional statistical data from the National Bureau of Statistics, and national economic accounting data.
