Professional Biography

Matthew J. Feery is a Principal at Much Shelist's Chicago office. Vice chair of the firm's Labor & Employment group, Matt helps employers of all sizes develop strategies and solutions to promote compliance with federal, state, and local labor and employment laws. He understands that clients want not just legal advice but also practical business advice that allows them to mitigate legal risk while growing their ventures.

Matt regularly advises on hiring and termination, restrictive covenants, COVID-19 pandemic-related issues, wage and hour requirements, discrimination and harassment, medical leaves, and related matters. Matt's experience spans issues arising under discrimination laws, such as Title VII and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and wage and hour laws such as the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). He is also well versed in the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN), and myriad other laws.

Clients rely on Matt to assist with harassment compliance training and to draft employment agreements, restrictive covenant agreements, employee handbooks, and other employment-related documents in a manner designed to protect and preserve flexibility for employers. Matt works with clients to develop solutions that are tailored to their businesses and their needs rather than present a one-size-fits-all solution regardless of business realities.

In addition to his counseling practice, Matt represents and defends employers in litigation in numerous settings, including state and federal courts and administrative agencies. He has experience in all aspects of client defense, including investigation, case analyses, and strategy development and execution.

Matt regularly writes and speaks on employment-related matters, keeping apprised of legal developments around the country so his clients are able to plan and not just react to changes in the labor and employment landscape.
